KUALA LUMPUR: Buying interests in Tenaga and gains in plantation stocks led the FBM KLCI to close at a fresh all-time high of 1,818.93 on Thursday, with an intraday high of 1,822.17 at 2.38pm.
At 5pm, the KLCI rose 4.82 points to 1,818.93. Turnover was 1.52 billion valued at RM1.657bil. There were 345 gainers, 420 decliners and 322 counters unchanged.
Reuters reported Chinese shares slipped in volatile trade on Thursday as a further spike in China's money-market rates tempered the effect of a survey showing a pick-up in manufacturing.
It said China's benchmark seven-day repo rates opened up nearly a full percentage point at 5% after the central bank let cash drain from the money market for a second week.
At Bursa Malaysia, PetDag rose 60 sen to RM30.90 and UMW 14 sen to RM12.54.
Tenaga rose 14 sen to RM9.50.
Aeon Credit fell 24 sen to RM15.44 and HLFG 10 sen to RM15.32.
Dutch Lady was down 14 sen to RM46.84 and Carlsberg 10 sen to RM12.18.
Crude palm oil fell RM12 to RM2,470.
The ringgit strengthened against the dollar at 3.1607 from 3.1677 the previous close.
Among the key regional markets,
Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.42% to 14,486.41;
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.71% to 22,835.82;
Shanghai’s Composite Index fell 0.86% to 2,164.32;
Taiwan’s Taiex rose 0.24% to 8,413.72;
South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.54% to 2,046.69;
Singapore’s Straits Times Index rose 0.35% to 3,216.07.
US light crude oil rose 39 cents to US$97.25 and Brent rose nine cents to US$107.89.
Spot gold rose US$3.01 to US$1,336.45.
