KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 19): Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) said global production of certified sustainable palm oil is poised to more than double next year from the current output of nine million tonnes.
Secretary-General Darrel Webber said in 2011, global production stood at 3.5 million tonnes, and Malaysia was the second largest global producer of sustainably produced palm oil.
On market destinations, Webber said the organisation focused on catering to increasing demand from the European Union, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.
"For RSPO, we are not focusing on penetrating China and India yet. "We still have other markets to work on, and the idea is, if we cover all these countries, China and India will automatically join the bandwagon," he told Bernama.
RSPO held its 11th Annual Roundtable Meeting in Medan, Indonesia, attended by over 738 participants comprising industry players from more than 30 countries.
Webber said the global consumption of sustainable palm oil envisaged to  grow to nine million tonnes by 2015, from five million tonnes currently, and this signalled that the world was ready to accept sustainable palm oil at the mainstream level.
"Industry players realise that green initiatives will further intensify in the future and this will lead to their business decision of opting for
sustainable palm oil," he added.
