Construction sector eyes RM110b projects this year

ROBUST OUTLOOK: Industry growth to be driven by Economic Transformation Programme


THE construction industry is expected to secure some RM110 billion worth of projects this year, said the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia's (CIDB) chief execu-tive Datuk Seri Dr Judin Abdul Karim.

He said the growth of the projects would be driven by the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), adding that the construction industry would be quite robust fol-lowing many projects which are expected to come on stream this year.

Last year, the total projects secured stood at RM120 billion, which surpassed the expected RM95 billion, Judin added.

"Despite the weakening world economy last year, our construction industry did very well, registering growth of about 18 per cent higher compared with 2011."

"The board expects the industry to be busy in the next few years with more Mass Rapid Transit projects as well as other ETP projects expected to be rolled out ," he said.

He was speaking to reporters at a press conference after the signing ceremony of corporate integrity pledge between CIDB and Malay-sian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here yesterday.

The pledge was signed as part of efforts to ensure responsibility, transparency and integrity in all dealings with the public and construction industry practitioners.

Following the pledge, CIDB will cooperate with MACC to organise some programmes to create awareness among CIDB officials and industry players on issues related to integrity and transparency.

Speaking on the overseas market, Judin said Myanmar and Indonesia offer huge opportunities for the local construction players given their big population and increasing demand for infrastructure.

He said that Malaysian contractors have the experience and expertise to cater to these countries' construction needs.
