KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 27): HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd says business is ongoing as per usual at its branches here despite several adverse reports originating including from the UK and China that sparked fears that the bank had had a capital shortfall.
It had been reported last week that an HSBC branch in UK had restricted the amount that could be withdrawn by an account-holder and that it had also sought reasons for the withdrawal.
Responding to a query by theedgemalaysia.com, HSBC Bank Malaysia dismissed the reports and said business was going on as per usual here.
“Our operations and cash withdrawal arrangement in Malaysia remain as usual whilst we, as a responsible bank, ask our customers about the purpose of large cash withdrawals or source of deposits, as per Bank Negara Malaysia's requirement,” it said.
The BBC had reported on Jan 24 that some HSBC customers had been prevented from withdrawing large amounts of cash because they could not provide evidence of why they wanted it.
