KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 7): Malaysian exports continue to rise with a growth of 14.4% to RM65.74 billion in December 2013 from a year earlier. The sixth consecutive month rise came on higher sales of electrical and electronic goods and refined petroleum products.

In a statement today, the Statistics Department said the country which sold more liquified natural gas, and chemical products however reported lower sales of palm oil products.

Meanwhile, Malaysian imports climbed 14.8% to RM56.27 billion. The rise came on higher purchases of intermediate, capital and consumption goods, the department said.

"Malaysia’s total trade in December 2013 increased by 14.6% from a year ago to RM122.02 billion," the department said.

According to the department, Malaysia had seen more transactions with nations including China, Australia and France besides the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries.

"The strong export growth of 14.4% in December 2013 marked the sixth consecutive month of export growth since July 2013. On average, exports expanded by 8.9% in the second half of 2013, compensating for a lacklustre first-half performance.

"With this recovery, Malaysia’s exports for the full year 2013 grew by 2.4% or RM17.17 billion to RM719.81 billion," the department said.

Meanwhile, full-year imports rose 7% to RM649.19 billion from a year earlier.
