Market Close KLCI rises 0.4% on US employment data

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 10): The FBM KLCI rose 7.55 points or 0.4% to close at 1,816.14 points on "seemingly" positive US employment data.

Areca Capital’s CEO Danny Wong said the improvement in the US labour market data reflected the US economy was in a better shape.

“The market’s good performance today is due to the positive US jobs report,” he told theedgemalaysia.com over the telephone.

“While we note the generally optimistic economic data released by the Department of Statistics (DoS), Malaysia, we opine its effect is largely minimal on the market today.”

The DoS in a statement today reported Malaysia’s manufacturing sales in December last year rose 5.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM55.4 billion.

Malaysia’s distributive trade sector sales also rose 7.7% y-o-y to RM227 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Moving in tandem, the industrial production index rose 4.8% y-o-y in December last year.

Malaysia’s total palm oil inventory fell 2.63% in January this year from a month earlier on lower crude palm oil output, although exports of the commodity declined.

Meanwhile, Alliance Research in a note today said the KLCI would likely trade above the 1,812.18 level by the end of this trading week.

The research house said an analysis of overall market action ended last week revealed that buying power was stronger than selling pressure.

Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.9 billion shares worth RM1.9 billion were traded. Gainers led losers by 530 versus 267, while 319 counters remained unchanged.

The top gainer was AEON Co. (M) Bhd while the top decliner was British American Tobacco (M) Bhd. PDZ Holdings Bhd was the most active counter.

Reuters reported most Asian markets made guarded gains today, encouraged that Wall Street was able to weather a seemingly disappointing US jobs report, though there was more than enough event risk ahead to keep investors cautious.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 1.17% and South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.04%. Singapore’s Straits Times Index closed 0.07% down.

In China, the Shanghai Composite Index ended 2.03% higher, but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed 0.27% lower.
