KUALA LUMPUR: The government is expected to save 15 per cent in travel expenses by doing away with travel agents as middle person, Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu)'s public service delivery and public finance division Datuk Aziah Bahauddin said today.

This is among the ways the government has outlined under the strategic reform initiatives (SRI) announced today to control government expenditure.

Other areas being looked into are subsidy rationalisation, procurement and transfer payment to statutory bodies, she said.

However, Aziah was unable to reveal when exactly the government intended to do away with travel agents.

"We are also looking at doing things with less human intervention but (more online)," she said at a press conference after the launch of six strategic reform initiatives here today.

Pemandu's Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala also said the government was also looking at right sizing its 1.2 million workforce.

"We want to make the most out of what we have now," he said. - BERNAMA
