KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 20): Axiata Group Bhd reported a 0.8% rise in fourth quarter net profit from a year earlier as the mobile telecommunication network provider registered higher revenue from most of its global operating units.

Lower taxes and minority interest had also supported profit growth as Axiata registered less income from its Indonesia and Bangladesh units, the group told Bursa Malaysia today.

Axiata said net profit rose to RM575.63 million in the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2013 (4QFY13) from RM571.1 million. Revenue climbed to RM4.51 billion from RM4.45 billion.

Profit before tax fell to RM726.57 million from RM872.66 million.

"The group continued to deliver continuous revenue growth of 1.4% to RM4.51 billion in the current quarter (4Q13) from RM4.45 billion recorded in the same quarter last year (4Q12), on the back of consistent higher revenue contribution from all key operating companies except Indonesia.

"Profit after tax (PAT) in the period decreased by 10.8% to RM586.3 million due to lower EBITDA contribution and higher foreign exchange losses in Indonesia as a result of US dollar appreciation against Indonesian rupiah, off-set partly by higher profit performance from Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Cambodia in Q4’13," Axiata said.

Axiata said its taxes fell to RM140.24 million from RM215.06 million.

On its Indonesian unit, Axiata said revenue fell 11% due to a weaker rupiah against the ringgit. A weaker rupiah translated into lower revenue when converted into the ringgit.

"Further strengthening of US dollar against rupiah in the current quarter resulted in foreign exchange losses of RM108.3 million and adversely affected the PAT performance, resulting in negative growth of 86.1% to RM24.9 million," Axiata said.

During the quarter, Axiata said the 95.5% fall in PAT at its Bangladesh operations had also curbed group bottom line growth.

The profit decline in Bangladesh was despite an 18.1% revenue growth there, according to Axiata.

For the full-year, Axiata said group net profit increased to RM2.55 billion from RM2.51 billion a year earlier. Revenue was higher at RM18.37 billion versus RM17.65 billion.

Axiata plans to pay a dividend of 14 sen a share for the quarter in review. This brings full-year dividend to 22 sen a share.
