KUALA LUMPUR (May 8): AsiaAisa has cleared its final hurdle in operating in India after the low cost carrier obtained an air operating permit from the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, AirAsia said its joint venture with India’s Tata Group, AirAsia (India) Pvt Ltd had received the permit on May 7, 2014 from the Indian authorities.

“The permit shall enable AirAsia India to perform commercial air operations,” said AirAsia in the statement.

The statement came following AirAsia’s CEO Tony Fernandes, who yesterday tweeted the airline had received the permit, via his Twitter account.

AirAsia’s operating license had been put on hold despite winning an initial nod in March last year to form a joint venture with India’s Tata Group. The airline had planned to operate flights in India by December last year.
