SHAH ALAM (June 5): MMC-Gamuda Sdn Bhd plans to establish a tunnelling training academy (TTA) in New Delhi, India soon to meet the requirements for onsite-training of workers undertaking public transportation projects in the country.

Gamuda Bhd Group Managing Director Datuk Lin Yun Ling said the idea was mooted following the exchange of expertise and training with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC) which is upgrading India's transportation system.

He said there was a need to set up a more realistic on-site training academy in India so that young trainees need not travel back and forth to obtain technical know-how and expertise from Malaysia.

"DMRC was concerned about resources and skills needed by their contractors, so they looked at possibilities of sending their personnel to our TTA here in Shah Alam to be trained.

"Their concern has made us look at the possibility of setting up a similar training establishment at their job site in India," he told reporters after signing a memorandum of agreement with DMRC, which was represented by its Managing Director Mangu Singh.

Lin also said 10 contractors from DMRC recently completed a two-week training stint at the Shah Alam TTA.

The TTA plans to train approximately 1,000 local talents by 2017 and has to date trained 508 trained personnel have taken up jobs in various tunnel-related sectors in the country.

Meanwhile, Mangu said the collaboration with MMC-Gamuda offered the best opportunity for the company to tap on MMC-Gamuda's expertise in tunnel construction which was not available in India.

"The training offered will be crucial to help our engineers gain hands-on experience in the various skills involved in tunnel boring machine.

"The courses taught are seamless to the actual tunnelling that takes place underground," Manhu added.
