Bargain-hunting lifts KL shares higher
Share prices on Bursa Malaysia were higher at midday today on bargain hunting and in line with overnight gains on Wall Street, dealers said.
At 12.30pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 7.43 points to 1,368.81, after opening 3.41 points lower at 1,364.79.
Dealers said US equity indices posted overnight gains as Eurozone finance ministers explored ways to recapitalise cash-strapped banks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 153.41 points higher at 10,808.71 and the S&P 500 rose 24.72 points to 1,123.95, while the Nasdaq Composite added 68.99 points to 2,404.82.
The market was also supported by the Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke's comment that the Fed was ready to take more steps to help the fragile US economic recovery, the dealers said.
Back home, the Finance Index gained 19.521 points to 12,420.37 and the Industrial Index added 22.97 points to 2,510.91, but the Plantation Index fell 11.55 points to 6,802.06.
The FBM Emas increased 50.65 points to 9,265.21 and the FBMT100 rose 52.96 points to 9,121.56 while the FBM70 went up 71.15 points to 9,831.11 but the FBM Ace was 30.72 points lower at 3,532.87.
Gainers led losers by 284 to 219, while 271 counters were unchanged, 702 untraded and 26 others suspended.
A total volume of 310.4 million shares worth RM412.85 million were transacted.
Among the actives, Focus Dynamic added half-a-sen to 8.5 sen, GPRO Technologies was flat at 15.5 sen and Integrated Rubber Corp gained one sen to 16 sen.
Among the heavyweights, Maybank gained seven sen to RM7.95 and Sime Darby added eight sen to RM8.34, while CIMB lost one sen to RM6.81. -- Bernama
