Malaysia’s foreign debts at RM241b end-June, says Najib
KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s foreign debt stood at RM241.7 billion at end-June 2011 while the international reserves were RM414.5 billion as of Sept 15, 2011.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, in his written reply to Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, said the foreign debt was 29.1% of GDP compared to 49.2% or RM173.4 billion in 2001.
In his reply in Parliament on Thursday, Oct 6 in his capacity as Finance Minister, Najib said the foreign debt profile was leaning towards long term maturity period while 62% of the debt was short and medium-term debt.
“The total of short term debt rose to RM92.1 billion which is 38% of the foreign debt as compared to RM24.1 billion or 14% in 2001,” he said.
