Khamil takes another giant under his care Empty Khamil takes another giant under his care

DRB-HICOM's managing director Datuk Mohd Khamil Jamil is probably one of Malaysia's most under-rated professional managers.

KUALA LUMPUR: A billionaire this writer met once said: "You can find good business anytime if you have the money. It is finding good people to run the business that is the hard part".

With this in mind, DRB-HICOM's managing director Datuk Mohd Khamil Jamil is probably one of Malaysia's most under-rated professional managers.

When Mohd Khamil came into DRB-HICOM, the company was a slumbering giant, whom many had written off as past its sell date.

Mohd Khamil then walked in, and without much fanfare transformed DRB-HICOM into a profitable concern with more than 60 subsidiaries today.

Mohd Khamil will soon have another giant under his care as DRB-HICOM yesterday made a successful bid to gain control of national carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd. But he has a track record to back him up.

DRB-HICOM's net profit has increased from RM141.41 million in 2005 to RM472.46 million in 2011, and the company has also set up the International College of Automotive in Pekan Pahang, where classes are conducted in English.

DRB-HICOM hopes one day, the college will be able to supply it with a highly skilled workforce.

But perhaps DRB-HICOM's greatest achievement under Mohd Khamil has been in the roping of Volkswagen AG.

Volkswagen's entry into Malaysia is a game changer in the Asian automotive landscape and Malaysia's best chance to overtake Thailand as the automotive hub of the region.

This is what Volkswagen has done for Czechoslovakia's Skoda Auto since taking it over completely in 2000.

It turned the ailing carmaker into a mini power house that now has production facilities even in countries like India.

Many customers now don't see a Skoda in front of them - they see a cut-price Volkswagen.

Volkswagen cars have a five-year warranty, as proof of their confidence in their technology.

This writer met Mohd Khamil over the weekend and he just shrugged off what he has done in DRB-HICOM, as "only doing his job".
