Tenaga, Axiata power KLCI to close above 1,600
KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI closed a hairline above the 1,600 psychological important level, buoyed by gains in heavyweights like Tenaga Nasional, Axiata and Sime Darby Bhd.
At the close, the KLCI was up 4.10 points 0.26% to 1,601.27, Market breadth was mixed with 360 gainers, 366 losers and 321 unchanged. Turnover was 1.11 billion shares valued at RM1.602bil.
Around Asia, most bourses stayed positive. Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 0.70% to 9524.79; Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index 0.93% tp 20327.32; Shanghai's A Index 1.82% to 2350.86 and Singapore's Straits Times Index 1.15% to 2980.20. However, South Korea's Kospi Index dropped 0.39% to 1986.63.
Nymex crude oil was quoted at US$103.17, spot gold at US$1656.55 and silver at US$31.65. The US dollar was quoted at 3.0712 and the euro at 4.0325.
At Bursa Malaysia, Tenaga rose 14 sen to RM6.51 on expectations of a strong set of results following compensation from Petronas and the government while Axiata added six sen to RM5.40. Tenaga and Axiata added 1.79 points and 1.20 points respectively to the KLCI. Sime's three sen gain to RM9.88, pushed the index up by 0.42 of a point.
Other gainers were timber company Jaya Tiasa, up 44 sen to RM8.99; SMPC Corp 34 sen to RM1.48 while Tradewinds Plantations climbed 19 sen to a fresh high of RM5.90.
Losers were Warisan TC, down 30 sen to RM2.20; Guinness Anchor 22 sen to RM12.64 and KLK fell 18 sen to RM24.32.
Counters related to hard disk drive manufacturer JCY International hogged the most active list. JCY-CE call warrants rose two sen to 19.5 sen with 43.70 million shares done, JCY-CF added 3.5 sen to 21 sen and JCY-CG 4.5 sen to 18 sen. The mother share added six sen to RM1.31.
