Petronas’ first floating LNG plant in 2015
The national oil company is also studying plans to build a new
regasification terminal each in Johor and Sabah, also by 2015
PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) plans to build the country’s first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal by 2015 to meet increasing future demand.
A floating terminal will enable easy loading of LNG on to ships.
Petronas acting chairman, president and chief executive
officer Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas said the state-owned
national oil company is also studying plans to build a new
regasification terminal each in Johor and Sabah also by 2015
to prepare for the impending shortfall of supply in Peninsular
Malaysia.
“It is with great pleasure that I announce that we have reached the final investment decision of our first floating LNG project, which aims to be the first of its kind in the world when it is commissioned in 2015,” Shamsul said in his speech at the 25th World Gas Conference here yesterday.
The conference, held for the first time in Southeast Asia,
attracting more than 10,000 local and international visitors,
was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Shamsul said the floating LNG terminal is an example where advancement of technology has made it economically feasible to monetise stranded gas in small and scattered conventional fields.
“We are also assessing the feasibility of constructing a second LNG regasification terminal to be located in southern Johor to meet the energy needs of the various planned developments
there.”
A third regasification terminal in Lahad Datu, Sabah, is also being pursued as an integrated gas-to-power development project slated to be commissioned by 2015.
Shamsul, however, did not specify the exact location of the floating LNG terminal as well as the investments involved in all of the projects.
Petronas currently owns three LNG plants and one just completed LNG regasification terminal.
Najib, together with Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, launched the country's first RM3 billion LNG regasification terminal and facility yesterday, which is located 3km offshore Sungai Udang, Malacca.
The terminal will convert LNG transported by ships from Sabah into natural gas which can then be used by Tenaga Nasional Bhd to generate power, household users such as for cooking, the ceramics industry and rubber glove producers.
