Midday Market KLCI dips 0.36% as regional markets turn cautious on US budget impasse
Business & Markets 2013

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 26): The FBM KLCI dipped 0.36% at the midday break in line with the cautious and tepid sentiment at most regional markets spooked by the specter of the US debt ceiling and budget impasse.
12.30pm, the FBM KLCI fell 6.39 points to 1,777.67.
Losers led gainers by 336 to 233, while 292 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.13 billion shares valued at RM780.94 million.
The top losers included GAB, Nestle, Aeon, Petronas Dagangan, HLFG, Takaful, Knusford, Lafarge Malaysia, KESM and DKSH.
MAS was the most actively traded counter with 227.24 million shares done. The stock rose 1.5 sen to 34.5 sen.
The other actives included Sona Petroleum, Sercol, Digista, China Stationery and Pelikan.
The gainers included F&N, Triplc, Taliworks, Tambun, E.I.G. Magni, United PLANTATION []s, Pelikan and Bina Puri.
BIMB Securities Research in a note Thursday said investors were beginning to question if the US government would come to an agreement addressing the nation’s debt ceiling as the deadline a drawing ever closer.
The research house said though it did not expect the Congress would sacrifice the US sovereign credit rating again for political reasons, the developments have spooked investors as the Dow Jones Industrial Average continued with its decline by 61 points to 15,273.
Meanwhile, European markets closed mixed as concerns over the region’s banks may be hit by lower earnings attributed to slower activity in the bond market, it said.
BIMB Securities said that in Asia, equities were mostly hit by the continuous selling as market uncertainties are becoming more apparent.
“Locally, the FBM KLCI closed the yesterday 8.42 points lower at 1,784.06 as foreign participation seemed to have dissipated.
“We expect the index to be rather flat today having declined since the start of the week and expect it to hover within the 1,780/85 level,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian share markets were left in limbo on Thursday as investors sweated out the latest battle over the U.S. budget, though Tokyo rallied as talk of a corporate tax cut resurfaced, according to Reuters.
After a weak start, Japan's Nikkei erased all its losses to be up 0.3 percent after Kyodo News reported the government would consider cutting corporate taxes, a proposal that has swung in and out of favour for weeks now, it said.

UOB-KayHian - Sona Petroleum (SONA MK) which was listed back in end-July, would likely be announcing the acquisition of some qualifying assets (QA) soon. According to channel check, the company is looking at some of the O&G assets in SGX-listed RH Petrogas, which currently owned a full spectrum (i.e. from exploration to production) assets that are located in China, Indonesia and Malaysia. In line with Datuk Seri Hadian's guidance during the IPO launch, SONA would be keen to first buy up some producing assets which have steady cash flow to fund future acquisition of development and exploration blocks - which thus makes RH Petrogas 's assets do look appealing to SONA.
