Nikkei slides over 2 pct as profit-taking hits large caps

TOKYO (Jan 6): Japan's Nikkei average slid more than 2 percent to snap a nine-day winning streak on Monday, its first trading day of 2014, as foreign hedge funds unwound positions in futures and large-cap stocks such as SoftBank and Fast Retailing.
The Nikkei closed down 2.4 percent at 15,908.88 after falling as far as 15,864.44, its lowest level since Dec. 25.
The Topix dropped 0.8 percent to 1,292.15.
Trading was active, with 2.93 billion shares changing hands, the highest in three weeks.
Large caps led the declines. SoftBank Corp shed 3.5 percent and was the most traded stock by turnover.
Fast Retailing Co plunged 5.8 percent.
On Dec. 30, the index closed at a six-year high with a 57 percent annual gain, its biggest in more than 40 years on the back of aggressive economic stimulus by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. - Reuters

European shares steady early ahead of services PMIs

PARIS (Jan 6): European shares steadied in early trade on Monday, with investors looking ahead to data on the region's services sector after comparable numbers from China pointed to a sharp slowdown in growth there.
The data due includes Germany's services PMI, seen at 54, and France's services PMI, seen at 47.4.
At 0809 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 0.1 percent at 1,311.50 points, while the euro zone's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index was down 0.1 percent at 3,072.56 points.
China's HSBC/Markit Economics services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) dropped to 50.9 in December, its lowest since August 2011, from 52.5 in November, adding to data showing the world's second-biggest economy lost steam in late 2013.
Shares in Telecom Italia fell 1.3 percent after Telefonica denied being part of a vehicle studying a potential joint offer for Brazilian wireless operator TIM Brasil, a unit of the Italian group.

Market Close KLCI falls 0.3% in volatile trade on China, US outlook

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 6): The FBM KLCI vacillated between gains and losses before falling 5.56 points or 0.3 %. This came amid losses across Asian markets on China's weaker economic data, and concerns over the US government's finances, analysts said.

At 5pm, the KLCI settled at 1,829.18. This came on losses in stocks like IOI Corp Bhd and Petronas Gas Bhd.

"The KLCI is no longer overbought," Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd research head Chan Ken Yew told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone today.

At current levels, the KLCI has declined significantly after rising to a fresh high of 1,882.2 last Tuesday (December 31, 2013).

The index had risen to a fresh high on fund managers' window-dressing strategy then. But technically overbought conditions had prompted profit taking which led to a correction in the market in recent days.

In the US, investors are concerned about the govermement's debt ceiling and monetary policy.

Reuters reported in December last year that the Obama administration warned Congress that the government could run out of borrowing authority needed to help pay its bills as soon as February 2014 if lawmakers did not swiftly raise the federal debt ceiling.

Today, Bursa Malaysia saw 1.96 billion shares worth RM1.84 billion changed hands. There were 538 gainers versus 262 decliners.

The top gainer was DKSH Holdings Malaysia Bhd while British American Tobacco (M) Bhd led decliners. The most-active stock was Hubline Bhd.

Worth noting is Eco World Development Group Bhd, formerly known as Focal Aims Holdings Bhd which soared as much as 10% to RM4.85.

This is the stock's highest in about 16 years since October 1997, Bloomberg data show.

Dealers said the rise in Eco World shares was possibly due to the Johor-based real estate developer's links to S P Setia Bhd president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin.

Recent news reports have also indicated that Eco World may be a stock to watch for its growth prospects. This is in anticipation of an asset injection into the company following emergence of new shareholders linked to Liew in the firm.

Elsewhere, Asian markets retreated today. In China, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.58% while the Shanghai Composite declined 1.8%.

Japan's Nikkei dropped 2.35%. Trading in Japan markets which closed since last Tuesday till last Friday had resumed today.

Nearer to home, Singapore's Straits Times ended 0.27% lower.

Reuters reported that Asian shares fell to a three-week low on Monday after growth in China's services sector slowed sharply last month, raising concerns about the pace of recovery in the world's second-largest economy, while safe-haven gold climbed.

The HSBC/Markit services sector Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) dropped to 50.9 in December from 52.5 in November, with new business expansion the slowest in six months.

The PMI follows a similar survey by China's National Bureau of Statistics on Friday, which also noted a slowdown in service-sector activity growth to a four-month low of 54.6
