KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 23): The FBM KLCI drifted lower in early trade On Thursday after coming under renewed selling pressure, in line with the soggy start at most regional markets.
At 9.05am, the FBM KLCI dipped 0.07 points to 1,814.03.
Gainers led losers by 121 to 72, while 129 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 67.49 million shares valued at RM40.26 million.
The top losers included Zhulian, LPI Capital, Nestle, Cahya Mata Sarawak, HLFG, Hong Leong Capital, Top Glove, Allianz, Pos Malaysia and Karex.
Hwang DBS Vickers Research in a market preview Thursday said that after coming under renewed pressures yesterday, the Malaysian bourse may drift with a marginal negative bias today.
It said that from a technical perspective, the benchmark FBM KLCI – which touched an intra-day low of 1,803 yesterday – could slip towards the psychological mark of 1,800 again.
“Meanwhile, Wall Street continued its sideways trading pattern last night. While waiting for fresh market leads to surface from the ongoing corporate reporting season, key US equity barometers ended between -0.3% and +0.4%.
“Back home, there may be added interest in the following stocks today: (a) Malaysia Aica, which has received an unconditional takeover offer to acquire all its shares for 85 sen per share in cash; (b) Opcom, after getting a contract valued at RM20 million for the manufacture, supply and delivery of optical fiber cables to Telekom Malaysia; and (c) Zhulian, as its latest quarterly earnings of RM14 million (down 56% y-o-y) came in below expectations,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian markets got off to a soggy start on Thursday as investors counted down to data on Chinese manufacturing, while diverging outlooks for interest rates sent the British pound soaring and tipped the Canadian dollar into a tailspin, according to Reuters.
An indifferent session on Wall Street and a mixed run of U.S. corporate earnings sapped the energy from stocks. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dipped 0.2 percent, while Australia's main index lost 0.4 percent, it said.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 23): The FBM KLCI fell 5.79 points or 0.3% as investors locked in gains ahead of the Chinese New Year holiday next week, remisiers said.
At 5pm, the KLCI settled at 1,808.31 on losses in stocks like CIMB Group Holdings Bhd and IOI Properties Group Bhd. Both stocks were among Bursa Malaysia's most-active entities.
"It is due to the holiday next week," a remisier told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone today. The Chinese New Year falls on January 31 (Friday).
Today, the KLCI's decline came amid news of weaker economic data from China, and the anticipation that US policymakers will further reduce quantitative easing (QE) measures next week.
Reuters reported that Asian markets fell on Thursday after a survey of Chinese manufacturers proved surprisingly soft, while the Australian dollar weakened due to its role as a whipping boy when activity in the Asian giant disappoints.
The flash Markit/HSBC Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 49.6 in January, from December's 50.5, suggesting the mild slowdown at the end of 2013 has continued into the new year.
In the US, Federal Reserve officials will meet this January 28 and 29 to decide on the country's QE policy.
Today, Bursa Malaysia saw 1.52 billion shares worth RM2.02 billion changed hands. There were 228 gainers versus 544 decliners.
Top gainers included Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd and Southern Acids (M) Bhd.
Leading decliners included British American Tobacco Malaysia Bhd and Zhulian Corp Bhd.
Across Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.79%. Within China, Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 1.51% while the Shanghai Composite dropped 0.47%
Elsewhere, Singapore's Straits Times fell 0.98%
