Market Open Select blue chips drag KLCI lower

KUALA LUMPUR (March 6): The FBM KLCI struggled to sustain its gains in early trade on Thursday as select blue dragged the benchmark index lower.
At 9.05am, the FBM KLCI shed 0.84 points to 1,828.27.
Gainers led losers by 115 to 61, while 156 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 127.41 million shares valued at RM33.24 million.
The top losers included UMW, BAT, Sime Darby, KESM, Petronas Gas, PPB, Petronas Chemicals. IOI Corp and KPJ Healthcare.
Hong Leong IB Research reiterated that only a decisive breakout above short term resistance of 1,839 (61.8% FR) would trigger a resumption of a fresh rally to revisit 1,857 (76.4% FR) and all time high at 1882.
“Key supports remain at 1,823 (50-day moving average) and 1,815 (30-day moving average and 38.2% FR). A breakdown below 1,815 will spur further downside towards 1,800 and 1,792 (200-day moving average) levels,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian shares could enjoy a reprieve on Thursday as diplomatic efforts moderate the crisis over Ukraine, while the euro comes under pressure as investors speculate whether the European Central Bank will ease policy later in the day, according to Reuters.
Any steps the ECB takes to support the still-fragile euro zone economy could benefit some assets, though gains could be limited ahead of pivotal U.S. payrolls data on Friday, it said.

Comments : A moment of triumph does not represent a life of success;
A moment of setback does not represent a life of failure.
This is what I have learned from my past experiences ...

Market Close KLCI rises 0.5% in line with plantation stocks, easing Ukraine crisis |

KUALA LUMPUR (Mar 6): The FBM KLCI rose on the back of rising share prices of plantation firms as Ukraine's political crisis eases.
The KLCI rose 9.58 points or 0.5% to settle at 1,838.69 at 5pm.
Choo Swee Kee, chief investment officer of TA Investment Management Bhd told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone that markets in the region were up as the situation in Ukraine had slightly cooled down.
“Investors have found comfort in the assurance given by Vladimir Putin that force will only be used as a last resort,” said Choo.
He also highlighted that the rise in selected plantation blue chip stocks today had supported the KLCI's gains. This came amid investors' expectation of higher crude palm oil (CPO) prices.
“The CPO price forecasts revealed during the Palm and Lauric Oil Conference had created interest in palm oil stocks today, driving the prices of blue chip plantation stocks,” he said.
Another fund manager agreed that the KLCI had risen on “gains in plantation stocks”.
The fund manager added that the Malaysian market was supported by liquidity flows and good fundamentals.
Across Bursa Malaysia, 2.13 billion shares worth RM2.1 billion were traded. There were 561 gainers against 244 decliners while 317 counters wre unchanged.
Hong Leong Capital Bhd led top gainers. Plantation stocks such as PPB Group Bhd, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd and Genting Plantations Bhd were also among leading gainers.
The most-active stock was Ingenuity Consolidated Bhd.
Across the region, Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.6%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng climbed 0.6%, while the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.2%.
Reuters reported that Asian shares enjoyed a reprieve today as diplomatic efforts between Moscow and Washington moderated the crisis over Ukraine.
Investors have now shifted their attention to whether the European Central Bank will ease its policy.
The KLCI's performance today comes ahead of Bank Negara Malaysia's monetary policy statement later today.
Tomorrow, the Statistics Department will announce the country's January 2014 external trade figures.
