KUALA LUMPUR (Mar 13): The FBM KLCI erased losses for a 0.26-point or 0.01% gain at the eleventh hour. The KLCI settled at 1,818.86 points following volatile trade.
Fund managers said the KLCI's volatility came amid Ukraine's political crisis and weaker-than-expected global economic data. In Malaysia, the KLCI had earlier declined on losses in stocks like SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd.
TA Investment Management Bhd chief investment officer Choo Swee Kee said the KLCI had remained rather flat as it was still seeking direction.
Choo said the KLCI's performance was influenced by the tense Ukraine's political crisis and global economic data. He said investors continued to be mindful of Malaysian Airline System Bhd's still missing MH370 aircraft.
“There is a lot of attention on the MH370 disappearance and on-going situation between Russia and Ukraine," Choo told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone.
However, he said economic numbers would play a greater role in influencing market direction.
Malaysia's Statistics Department said today the nation's industrial production index (IPI) rose 3.7% in January 2014 from a year earlier.
The IPI's increase came in below a median market forecast of a 4.1% increase, based on a Reuters survey.
Elsewhere, Reuters reported that China's industrial output rose 8.6 percent in the first two months of 2014 from a year earlier, missing market expectations. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast industrial output to rise 9.5%.
Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.7 billion shares worth RM2.15 billion changed hands. There were 326 gainers versus 415 decliners.
The top gainer was Hong Leong Capital Bhd while the leading decliner was Genting Plantations Bhd. The most-active stock was Infortech Alliance Bhd
Major Asian stock markets fell. Japan's Nikkei fell 0.1% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.67%.
