Market Close KLCI extends marginal gains as Ukraine crisis eases

KUALA LUMPUR (Mar 5): The FBM KLCI registered marginal gains as worry over a possible outbreak of Ukraine war eased.

At 5pm, the benchmark index rose marginally by 2.65 points or 0.1% to close at 1829.11.

A dealer told theedgemalaysia.com that most markets were up today, with the KLCI in a slightly positive territory amid improvements in Ukraine situation.

He said that the market was still rebounding from the 20-point drop seen on Monday.

“The KLCI is slightly up today in response to the situation in Ukraine, but I think that the market is still jittery as the index has not registered a big gain yet.

“The market is closely monitoring the Ukrainian crisis,” he said.

Across the board, 2.40 billion shares  worth RM2.15 billion were traded. Gainers had outnumbered losers, with 466 gainers versus 323 losers, while 332 counters were unchanged.

British American Tobacco Bhd (BAT) led the top gainers on the bourse, while the top decliner was Hong Leong Financial Group Bhd (HLFG). The most active counter was Ingenuity Consolidated Bhd (INGENCO).

Across the region, Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.2%, South Korea’s KOSPI climbed 0.9%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.3%.

Reuters reported that Asian stocks rose while safe-haven yen remained on a defensive following Vladimir Putin’s remarks, which had eased fears of a military conflict in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Putin had defended Russia’s actions in Crimea and said that he would only use force as a last resort.
