MAS may order more planes: CEO
Malaysian Airline System Bhd may need to order more planes after joining the Oneworld aviation alliance, Chief Executive Officer Tengku Azmil Zahruddin told reporters in Selangor today.
“I expect that we might need more planes, maybe earlier, he said. ‘‘But I can’t, give you a comprehensive answer now because we have to do a network study first.’’
Malaysian Air, which is switching to owning rather than leasing planes, has ordered 55 Boeing Co. 737-800s. It also has 15 Airbus SAS A330-300’s on order, with options for 10 more, as well as six double-decker Airbus A380s, due to start arriving next year after multiple delays.
He also said Malaysian Airline will continue its code-sharing partnership with KLM even after agreeing to join the Oneworld aviation alliance.
KLM, a brand of Air France-KLM, is part of the rival SkyTeam alliance of carriers. “With us joining Oneworld, it does not require us to break off our relationship with any other airlines that we are doing code-sharing with like KLM,” Tengku Azmil said. -- Bloomberg
