PETALING JAYA: The number of vehicles registered throughout the country has increased by 8.35% in January to May this year compared with the same period last year, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
He said 520,000 vehicles were registered from January to May this year compared with 480,000 during the same period last year.
“Going by this figure, we are very confident that the number of vehicles registered this year will exceed one million,” he said at the opening ceremony of Naza Quest Auto Sdn Bhd's Chevrolet sales, services and spare parts (3S) centre here yesterday.
Currently, he said, there were more than 20 million registered vehicles in the country.
When asked if the Government had any plan to limit the number of registered vehicles, which is one of the main causes of traffic congestion, Kong said there was no such plan as the country practised open market policy.
“However, the Government is implementing various initiatives, including improving the country's public transportation system, to ease traffic congestion. What is important is to ensure better road safety so that the number of accidents and road fatalities does not increase even when there are more cars on the road,” he said.
He added that the number of registered vehicles and used vehicle ownerships also showed that the economy was healthy.
On the centre, Naza Quest chief operating officer Datuk Maruan Mohd Said said it was the third 3S centre in the Klang Valley.
He said the RM2mil 3S centre featured 12,000 sq ft showroom space, three car service bays with second stage expansion to eight bays and a customer waiting lounge.
Meanwhile, Bernama quoting Maruan, reported that Naza Quest was targeting to set up a network of 31 Chevrolet 3S centres nationwide by year-end and hoped to increase the number of outlets to 41 by 2013.
He said Naza Quest currently operated 17 Chevrolet 3S centres nationwide.
