Malaysia’s construction work value slips 5.4% to RM21bil
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded RM20.99bil in the value of
construction work in the first quarter ended March 31, 2013 (Q1, 2013),
down 5.4% from the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2012 (Q4, 2012), due to
fewer projects.
The Statistics Department said on Thursday there
were 8,719 projects in Q1, 2013 compared with 9,324 in Q4 2012 valued at
RM22.19bil.
However, Q1, 2013 saw a pick-up compared from Q1,
2012 as value of construction work rose 18.4% to RM17.72bil based on
8,586 projects.
Of the RM20.99bil in value of construction work
in Q1, 2013, the civil engineering sub-sector had the largest share at
38% or RM7.98bil.
Next was non-residential buildings, with 32%
(RM6.71bil) and residential buildings at 25.8% (RM5.41bil) while for
special trade is was 4.2% (RM884mil),
Selangor topped the list in the value of construction work in Q1, 2013, at RM4.52bil or 21.5% among the states.
Johor
was second in terms of value at RM3.33bil (15.9%); Wilayah Persekutuan
Kuala Lumpur RM3.22bil (15.3%); Sarawak RM1.95bil (9.3%) and Sabah,
RM1.33bil (6.3%).
The five states accounted for 68.3% of the total value of construction work done.
In
terms of percentage distribution of value of construction work done by
project owner, the private sector accounted for 69.8%, followed by
government at 18.8% and the remaining 11.3% by the public corporations.
