KUALA LUMPUR (May 30): The MRT project has already profited the nation with the return of many Malaysian engineers from abroad, claimed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Najib who was speaking at the launch of the world’s first Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine (VDTBM) said the project attracted the return of many home-grown engineers and has also created thousands of new jobs.

“This brain gain augurs well for our economy, not just boosting it in reversing outflow of foreign exchange, but also boosting our economy’s value chain. It has opened up areas of knowledge which we could not have imagined.

“The design for the world’s first VDTBM was a result of joint efforts between MMC Gamuda and German tunnelling experts Herrenknecht AG,” said Najib, adding he was proud of Gamuda’s achievements in designing and building the VDTBM as it was made in Malaysia.

He also pointed out that this was a fine example of Malaysians making a breakthrough in a very specialised area such as tunnel engineering.

“As a result of our courage, we have begun venturing into fields beyond our comfort zone. Tunnelling is an area that we will move into the future and having a crop of people who are already experts on it will put Malaysia at the forefront of the tunnel engineering not only in this region but also in the world,” said Najib.

The VDTBM is a unique engineering construct as it was designed to be able to handle different earth types such as normal soil (easy to dig through) and caustic limestone (difficult to dig through), a condition prevalent in Kuala Lumpur.

Another feature available is the fact that it lessens the probabilities of a blow-out, which could damage the machine itself due to air pockets or differences in air pressure and sinkholes.

The VDTBM is capable of creating its own slurry and fill up any air pockets to decrease the possibility of a blow out and will also fill up any excess air pockets as it tunnels through, to help prevent sinkholes.
