KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 29): Branding Association of Malaysia has proposed the setting up of a branding association for Asean countries to cater for the need of brands across the region, in promoting products and services in the world market.
Its President Datuk Eric Chong said each member country should set up its branding association by reaching out to the respective small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and bringing out their valuable brand.
"We are ready to help Asean business associations to establish similar organisations like us. Currently, we are helping our friends in Thailand to set up a branding association," he told reporters at the Brand Entrepreneurs' Conference 2013.
Chong said a branding association can help business communities to prepare for an Asean Economic Community in 2015.
Asean member countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.
Established in July 2000, the Branding Association of Malaysia advocates unity among its members, to allow the association to position themselves on issues and policies that may hinder the brand as a whole.
It will also help promote trust and cooperation among small and medium brands, and allow members to share across their branding strategies in building successful brands.
Chong said the association was prepared to work with the government to build more brand awareness and to help the government make Malaysia a more "branded" nation.
"Branding is a serious business as it is a tool in our modern global business environment," he said.
The conference, hosted by the Branding Association of Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), was opened by Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Hamim Samuri.
Over 750 people, including high commissioners and ambassadors from Brunei, Indonesia, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, attended the conference.
