Market Close KLCI almost flat in volatile trade
Business & Markets 2013
Written by Chong Jin Hun of theedgemalaysia.com
Tuesday, 26 November 2013 17:20
KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 26): The FBM KLCI erased losses in volatile trade before ending almost flat. Analysts said the KLCI has seen range-bound trading ahead of the conclusion of Malaysia's financial reporting season this Friday.

At 5pm, the KLCI rose 0.16 point or 0.01% to 1,798.13. This came on gains in Tenaga Nasional Bhd and CIMB Group Holdings Bhd.

RHB Research Institute Sdn Bhd research head Lim Chee Sing said the KLCI is "stuck in range-bound" trading. The KLCI had reached the intraday low of 1,796.25 before trading at a high of 1,802.78.

"The KLCI had not crossed the 1,800-point level convincingly," Lim told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone today.

Lim said while the Malaysian economy is stable, he is also mindful of the impact of the potential reduction in the US' quantitative easing (QE) measures to Malaysian financial markets.

As the timing of the QE reduction becomes more certain, Lim said investors need to be aware of potential capital outflow from the country. This is due to the high foreign shareholding in local financial assets.

Across Bursa Malaysia, 2.13 billion shares worth RM2.68 billion changed hands. There were 347 gainers versus 467 decliners.

The top gainer was Petronas Dagangan Bhd while British American Tobacco (M) Bhd led decliners. The most-active stock was Ingenuity Consolidated Bhd.

Within Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.67% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.01%.

Meanwhile, Singapore's Straits Times dropped 0.27%.

Reuters reported that Asian shares rose for the third straight day on Tuesday, while oil prices regained some semblance of stability after the previous session's slide as traders questioned how quickly the Iranian nuclear accord could turn into higher supplies.

The yen came off a 4-year trough against the euro, and inched up against the dollar as traders repositioned after several days of sharp moves. Thailand was in the spotlight again as political instability threatened to undermine the economy.
