KUALA LUMPUR: Dialog Group Bhd executive chairman Dr Ngau Boon Keat has been named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) 2013 as well as Master Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Ngau, a prominent figure in the oil and gas industry and the co-founder of Dialog Group, will represent Malaysia in Monte Carlo, Monaco next year for the coveted EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year (WEOY) award.

He will compete with more than 50 other country winners at the annual event. Ngau received the two main awards from Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

The minister also presented awards to the winners of the other categories — the Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year, the Technology Entrepreneur Of The Year and Woman Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Bryan Loo, managing director of Loob Holding Sdn Bhd, won the award in the Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year category, while Cypark Resources Bhd group CEO Daud Ahmad took home the Technology Entrepreneur Of The Year award.

Datuk Ir Rosaline Ganendra, director of Minconsult Sdn Bhd, was the winner in the Woman Entrepreneur Of The Year category.

Partner and EOY Malaysia programme director Philip Rao said Ngau was chosen as EOY 2013 as he is an outstanding example of what it means to be an entrepreneur.

“He has set new benchmarks, defied the odds, built businesses, created jobs and supported his community. Ultimately, through his entrepreneurial spirit, he has built a better working world for all his employees, his community and his nation. We have no doubt that Dr Ngau will do us proud in Monte Carlo next year,” he said.

Ngau co-founded the company in 1984 with four employees and grew it into a listed company in 1996 with a market capitalisation of RM55 million. Today, Dialog has a market capitalisation of RM7.3 billion and a workforce of 2,700 people.

Ngau and his wife are the founders of the MyKasih Foundation, which provides food aid, training and student bursary programmes to families to help them break the cycle of poverty.

Khairy said as Malaysia strives to become a high-income nation by 2020, the role of entrepreneurs in this journey grows in significance.

“To meet the challenges of ensuring sustainable growth in a highly competitive environment, Malaysia must therefore continue to tap into the entrepreneurial spirit and ability of our people to innovate and stay ahead of the competition,” he added.

The winners were selected by an independent panel of judges guided by a set of globally benchmarked criteria. The EOY 2013 Malaysia programme event is supported by ASTRO Awani, BFM 89.9, Bits and Pixels Sdn Bhd, Bursa Malaysia Bhd, Multimedia Development Corp, Nanyang Siang Pau Sdn Bhd, The Edge and The Peak.
