KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 17): The FBM KLCI rose 13.02 points or 0.7% to a record close after reaching an all-time intraday high earlier today. Remisiers said investors had chased blue-chip stocks which contributed to the KLCI's gains.

At 5pm, the KLCI settled at 1,850.9. The KLCI's rise came on gains in stocks like Axiata Group Bhd and Petronas Gas Bhd.

“The heavyweights are pushing the index upward. These include British American Tobacco Malaysia Bhd (BAT) and Petronas Gas that have made big gains today.

“Nevertheless, on the retail side, is it quiet.” a remisier told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone today.

The KLCI had earlier reached a record intraday high of 1,850.99 at 2.55pm before reducing gains, according to Bloomberg data.

This comes ahead of the US Federal Reserve's meeting today and tomorrow (December 17 and 18). The meeting is closely watched in anticipation that US policy makers may start reducing the world's largest economy's quantitative easing (QE) measures this month or postpone the move till the first quarter of next year.

Today, Bursa Malaysia saw RM1.08 billion shares worth RM1.55 billion changed hands. There were 388 gainers versus 362 decliners.

The top gainer was BAT while MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd led decliners. The most-active entity was BIMB Holdings Bhd warrants.

Across Asia, Japan's Nikkei rose 0.83% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.2%.

Reuters reported that Asian shares pushed higher on Tuesday on the back of rising U.S. manufacturing output and a jump in euro zone business activity, ahead of a momentous U.S. Federal Reserve policy decision later this week.

Investors are on tenterhooks over when the Fed will start to reduce its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying programme, a major driver of global risk assets in recent years.

A majority of economists polled by Reuters expect the taper to happen in March, but a recent run of upbeat economic data has steadily shortened the odds on an announcement at this week's two-day meeting concluding on Wednesday -- or in January.
