KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 17): The FBM KLCI rose 0.48% in early trade on Tuesday, against the trend at most regional markets as the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting kept global investors on tenterhooks.
At 9.15am, the FBM KLCI added 8.70 points to 1,779.5.
Gainers led losers by 250 to 62, while 124 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 136.93 million shares valued at RM93.86 million.
The top gainers included BAT, Nestle, Petronas Dagangan, Narra, Focal, Aeom Credit, PPB, Petronas Gas, Tasek and Hong Leong Bank.
Hwang DBS Vickers Research in a market preview Tuesday said a catch-up rebound was in store for Malaysian equities today.
It said that on the chart, the benchmark FBM KLCI was set to jump ahead, possible challenging to overcome the immediate resistance threshold of 1,785 and climb towards the psychological mark of 1,800.
“This comes as regional peers posted gains yesterday when our local stock exchange was on holiday with Indonesia (+3.4%), Thailand (+3.1%) and Philippine (+2.8%) leading the way. Meanwhile, key US stock indices ended between -0.1% and +0.8% last night.
“In terms of corporate news flows, of probable interest today include: (a) Focal Aims Holdings, after a business daily reported that it is going to be a takeover target by individuals behind the emerging property group EcoWorld Development; (b) Sumatec Resources, as another daily newspaper said tycoon Halim Saad might be injecting an oil concession in Kazakhstan into the company; and (c) Tropicana, which has entered into an agreement to purchase 18 pieces of freehold land measuring a total size of approximately 104 hectares located in Johor for RM367 million,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian shares slipped slightly and the dollar treaded water on Tuesday, as global markets braced for the outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting at which it is widely expected to begin withdrawing stimulus, according to Reuters.
Despite a lacklustre August jobs report, the U.S. central bank is expected to begin scaling back its quantitative easing scheme by reducing its monthly asset purchases by about $10 billion from the current $85 billion, it said.

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 17): The FBM KLCI remained in positive territory at mid-morning on Tuesday but its gains were limited in line with the tepid sentiment at most key regional markets as the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting kept global investors on tenterhooks.
At 10.01am, the FBM KLCI was up 3.29 points to 1,774.09.
Gainers led losers by 319 to 119, while 202 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 343.91 million shares valued at RM268.89 million.
The top gainers included Shangri-La, Nestle, Narra, Petronas Dagangan, Focal, Aeon, Aeon Credit, BAT, Tasek and Petronas Gas.
Salcon was the most actively traded counter with 21.82 million shares done. The stock fell 2.5 sen to 64.5 sen.
The other actives included Hovid, IRCB, TMS, Tiger Synergy, UEMS and TH Heavy Engineering.
The losers included GAB, Genting PLANTATION []s, United Plantations, HLFG, Lafarge Malaysia, Country View, Bernas, KPJ and Sunway.
BIMB Securities Research in a market preview Tuesday said that the news on Larry Summers withdrawal from the race to head the Federal Reserve pushes Wall Street to end higher.
It said this also made the European stock market to five-year highs.
Moreover, the weekend agreement between the US and Russia on a plan to get rid of Syria’s chemical weapons provide an extra boost on investor sentiment, said the research house.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P500 rallied 0.77% and 0.57% respectively to close at 15,494.78 and 1,697.60 respectively.
BIMB Securities said the news on Larry Summers’ withdrawal also welcomed by investors in Asia as key regional indices ended higher yesterday.
The local market was closed for Malaysia Day holiday yesterday.
On Friday, the FBM KLCI ended flattish, shredded 1.60 points or 0.09% to 1,770.8 after four consecutive days of rally.
“Trading participations shows net buying from foreign institutions; while local retail and institutions were net sellers.
“We expect the local market to remain its sideways today due to lack of fresh catalysts with immediate resistance at 1,775/82 while support at 1,761/56,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian shares slipped slightly and the dollar treaded water on Tuesday, as global markets braced for the outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting at which it is widely expected to begin withdrawing stimulus, according to Reuters.

Midday Market KLCI pares much of gains in morning session

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 17): The FBM KLCI pared much of its gains in the morning session on Tuesday as regional markets eased ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting.
At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI was up a mere 0.33 points to 1,771.13. The index had earlier risen to its intra-morning high of 1,781.14.
Gainers led losers by 371 to 222, while 270 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 789.02 million shares valued at RM727.27 million.
The top gainers included Shangri-La, Nestle, Malpac, Narra, Focal, Aeon, Tasek, Bintulu Port, Petronas Dagangan and DKSH.
The actives included IRCB, Salcon, Hovid, Green Packet, UMES and Sona Petroleum.
The losers included United PLANTATION []s, GAB, Lafarge Malaysia, HLFG, Country View, Quality Concrete, Aeon Credit, Dutch Lady , KPJ and Pos Malaysia.
Maybank IB head of retail research and chief chartist Lee Cheng Hooi in a note Tuesday said the the FBM KLCI surged 47.00 points week-on-week on local and foreign buying activities to close at 1,770.80 last Friday.
He said volume ranged from 1.23 billion to 1.99 billion shares traded.
“The obvious support areas for the FBM KLCI are in the 1,660 to 1,770 zone.
“The key resistance levels of 1,779 and 1,826 may see profit-taking activities,” said Lee.
Elsewhere, Asian shares eased and the dollar firmed on Tuesday as investors consolidated positions ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting at which it is expected to begin withdrawing stimulus, according to Reuters.
While the Fed on Wednesday is expected to decide by how much it is trimming its massive bond purchases, markets anticipate a much longer road to rate hikes after former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers dropped out of the race to become the next Fed chief, it said.

Market Close KLCI volatile, rises 0.2% on US Fed concerns
Business & Markets 2013
Written by Chong Jin Hun of theedgemalaysia.com

KUALA LUMPUR (September 17): The FBM KLCI vacillated between gains and losses before making a four-point leap in the 11th hour.
At 5pm, the KLCI rose 4.14 points or 0.23% to settle at 1,780.80. The rise came on gains in stocks like GENTING BHD [] and UEM SUNRISE BHD [].
This comes ahead of the conclusion of the US Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting today and tomorrow (September 17 and 18).
The FOMC meeting will decide on the timing and quantum of US policy makers’ planned reduction of their quantitative easing measures which have supported the rise in Asian stock markets.
"The market is driven by the FOMC meeting," a remisier told the theedgemalaysia.com over telephone.
Reuters reported that Asian shares eased and the dollar firmed on Tuesday as investors, who welcomed Lawrence Summers ending his bid to lead the U.S. Federal Reserve, consolidated positions before a meeting at which the central bank is likely to start withdrawing stimulus.
While a trim of the Fed's massive bond purchases causes some apprehension, markets anticipate a much longer road to rate hikes after former Treasury Secretary Summers dropped out of the race to become its next chief.
Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.5 billion shares worth RM1.75 billion changed hands. There were 443 gainers versus 308 decliners.
The top gainer was British American Tobacco Malaysia Bhd while Aeon Credit Services (M) Bhd led decliners. The most-active entities included Integrated Rubber Corp Bhd warrant and share.
Within Asia, Japan's Nikkei erased gains for a 0.65% decline. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.31% while Singapore's Straits Times erased earlier losses to register a 0.04% rise.
