Midday Market KLCI pares gains, but remains firmly above 1,750-level, blue chips lift
Business & Markets 2013

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 10): The FBM KLCI pared some of its gains at the midday break on Tuesday, but remained firmly above the 1,700-point level in line with the strong performance at key regional markets.
At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI rose 0.85% or 15.13 points to 1,762.16, lifted by gains including at Petronas linked stocks and index-linked banking stocks. The index had earlier climbed more than 1.17% to 1,773.03
Gainers led losers by 479 to 1671, while 267 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.03 billion shares valued at RM1.07 billion.
The top gainers in the morning session included BAT, Aeon Credit, PPB, Petronas Dagangan, Petronas Gas, Tasek, Aeon, Takaful, Hong Leong Bank and Public Bank.
DVM was the most actively traded counter with 51.83 million shares done. The stock added half a sen to 8 sen.
The other actives included Sona Petroleum, TMS, Asia Media, Tanjung Offshore, IRCB, sumatc and Olympia.
The decliners included Shell, Cahya Mata Sarawak, Taliworks, Fima Corp, GCE, Astro, and SCIB.
Affin IB vice president and head of retail research Dr Nazri Khan in said that following the strong U-turn shown by Bursa (a gain of 64 points or 3.8% since 28th August low), the FBM KLCI should stage more corrective bounce (with 1,750 level as the immediate target) neutralising its deeply-sold-situation (after dropping 151 points or 8.3%, 25th July - 28th August) and tracking more upswings of Wall Street and Asian regional indices.
He said Bursa should get support from buoyant Wall Street based on fresh optimism about the global economy and burst of corporate deal activity (Microsoft buying Nokia and Verizon buying Vodafone).
“On the technical front, we see positive near term bias with the bulls getting early edge as long as FBMKLCI stays above 1,700 psycho level and 200 day moving average.
“We expect technical retracement in ringgit and global oversold technical condition (MSCI All-World has dropped 4.1% to six week low since 13th August) to lead to more bounce in regional markets with the FBM KLCI aiming for 1,750 resistance level.
“The dramatic FBM KLCI reversal action at 1,660 level might be seen as a show of strength by technical traders, especially in the wake of a low volume finish this week. Any break above 1,730 level may turn the near term trend in favour of the bull camp, which opens up the prospect for a push toward 1,750 and 1,760 levels,” he said.
Elsewhere, Asian stocks rose to three-month highs on Tuesday as investors wagered upcoming Chinese data will add to signs the global economy is stabilising, while receding fears of a U.S. military strike against Syria eased oil prices, according to Reuters.
Russia's proposal to work with Damascus to put its chemical weapons under international control could avert planned U.S. action and prompted President Barack Obama to say he saw a possible breakthrough in the crisis, it said.
