KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 16): The FBM KLCI, triggered by the further weakening of the ringgit today, tumbled 11.02 points or 0.6% to close at 1,813.01 points, according to dealers.
“The weakening ringgit triggered the KLCI’s poor performance today,” a dealer told theedgemalaysia.com. Yesterday, the KLCI was also forced down by the ringgit.
“We also expected the KLCI to consolidate and take a ‘breather’ since it has made recent gains,” added the dealer.
Bloomberg reported the ringgit fell saying it is headed for its biggest two-day drop since November last year, as an improving US economy bolstered speculation the Federal Reserve will accelerate stimulus cuts.
The currency depreciated 0.3 percent this morning and 0.8 percent from January 10 to 3.2968 per dollar as at 11 am in Kuala Lumpur, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The ringgit earlier touched 3.2997, its lowest level since January 3.
“This week, it was driven largely by the stronger US data, especially from the strong retail sales,” said Sean Yokota, head of Asian strategy in Singapore at Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken AB. “That’s driving Asian currencies, including the ringgit, weaker.”
Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank Research in a note today said the KLCI near term outlook has turned cautious following yesterday’s selldown.
“Unless the KLCI can swiftly reclaim the 10-d simple moving average (SMA) resistance at 1,835 levels, ongoing downward consolidation may continue towards 1,800 points and 100-d SMA (1,795 points) zones before anticipating a meaningful recovery.
“Further upside resistances are 20-d SMA at 1,841 points and 1,850 points,” said Hong Leong research analyst Low Yee Huap.
Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.7 billion shares, worth RM2.2 billion were traded. Losers overwhelmed gainers by 571 versus 245, while 306 counters remained unchanged.
The top gainer was Hong Leong Capital Bhd. Bursa Malaysia earlier today issued an unusual market activity (UMA) query on Hong Leong Capital, a financial services entity on the ‘unusual rise’ in its share price in recent months.
The top loser was AEON Credit Service (M) Bhd while the most active counter was Iris Corporation Bhd.
Trading on Bursa Malaysia will be closed tomorrow (January 17) in conjunction with Thaipusam, an Indian festival celebrated by the country.
Across the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 0.39%, but South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.21%. Singapore’s Straits Times Index closed 0.11% down.
In China, the Shanghai Composite Index ended 0.02% higher and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also closed 0.37% higher.

ada ka? cause of slight weakness in ringgit that we warrant a 10 point drop or would it just be a selldown in to the holiday season
