At 1143 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 1.7 per cent at 918.35 points . Europe's main investor fear gauge, the VDAX-NEW volatility index was up 7.4 per cent at 45.87, signalling a sharp rise in investors' risk aversion and a run to safe-haven assets.
In early afternoon trading, London's FTSE 100 index tumbled 1.93 per cent to 5,265.0, Frankfurt's DAX 30 dived 2.75 per cent to 5,420.07 and in Paris the CAC 40 retreated 2.53 per cent to 2,954.37. Madrid shed 1.89 per cent and Milan 2.30 per cent . - Agencies
