Europe Roundup: Stocks rally

LONDON: European stocks rally yesterday as investors brushed off news of a credit rating downgrade for Italy to focus on an upcoming meeting of the US Federal Reserve, analysts said.

"European indices rallied on Tuesday led by gains in the miners, banks and pharmaceutical companies ... with investors turning a blind eye to a cut in Italy's credit rating by Standard & Poor's," said Joshua Raymond, chief market strategist at City Index traders.

London's FTSE 100 index was up 1.25 per cent to 5,325.18 points approaching midday in the British capital yesterday.

Frankfurt's DAX jumped 2.04 per cent to 5,525.52 points and in Paris the CAC 40 won 1.32 per cent to 2,978.58. Milan advanced 1.36 per cent. - AFP
