KUALA LUMPUR: Asian markets were mixed overall, on Monday morning
while the U.S. economy showed signs of strengthening were countered by
concerns that Europe may enter a recession.
Nymex crude oil fell half a percent to US$101.69 per barrel while spot gold gained 0.13% to US$1,634.51 per ounce.
The
local bourse's benchmark index was 0.07% lower at 1,520.85. The Hang
Seng Index gained 0.20% to 19,041.69 while Shanghai's A shares Index
fell 0.28% to 2,279.28. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.19% to 8,438.01
while Korean's Kospi Index fell 0.19% to 1,849.72. The Straits Times
Index climbed 0.02% to 2,720.37.
At Bursa Malaysia,
gainers outpaced losers at 286 versus 221 while 279 remained unchanged.
Total volume traded was 663 million shares, with a turnover of RM417
million.
Mudajaya Group Bhd gained 22 sen to RM2.54, Supermax Corporation Bhd rose 14 sen to RM4.07 and Tenaga Nasional Bhd climbed 8sen to RM6.15.
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd lost 11 sen to RM8.70, Telekom Malaysia Bhd fell 9 sen to RM4.82, and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd dropped 12 sen to RM24.72.
The ringgit weakened against the US dollar at 3.1458 and strengthened against the euro to 4.0097.
