Zecon vies to get contract for 250-bed specialist hospital in Cheras (7028)
KUCHING: Zecon Bhd is vying for a contract to build a 250-bed university specialist hospital in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur under the private finance initiative (PFI).
The company also expects to commence works on the proposed 300-bed Petra Jaya government hospital here in the next few months.
Zecon chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo said the company had submitted a design plan of the proposed Cheras specialist hospital to the Government which was followed by active discussions on the project in the past several months.
“The proposed specialist hospital will be built under the public private partnership (PPP) agenda. We (Zecon) are confident of being awarded the project,” he told StarBiz after the company AGM here yesterday.
Zecon had participated in the tender process for the Cheras hospital project which was undertaken by the Prime Minister's Department.
On the Petra Jaya hospital project, Hamid said Zecon submitted the project's detailed design to the Health Ministry weeks ago.
The ministry had earlier given a letter of intent to Zecon to implement the hospital project on “design and build” concept.
“We hope to translate the letter of intent into an award (contract) before end of the year,” he added.
The new hospital on about 8ha is to alleviate the congestion experienced by Sarawak General Hospital, the state capital's sole government hospital.
On property development,Hamid said Zecon would build a supermall at its Vista Tunku project site near to Wisma Bapa Malaysia, the state secretariat, in Petra Jaya.
The company has identified a buyer for the proposed RM150mil supermall on 5ha, which will cater for the middle income group.
Hamid said construction of the supermall, the biggest in city north area, was expected to start in the next few months for completion in 24 months. The project will provide some 1,000 parking lots.
Vista Tunku now comprises residential homes.
He said Zecon was currently working on another project - a mixed housing and commercial development with high-rise buildings in its Petra Indah site.
The project, which has a gross development value (GDV) of more than RM1bil, is planned for development in five to seven phases over 10 years.
The proposed development will involve the construction of a bridge across Sungai Santubong. Its masterplan has been approved by the authorities concerned.
Hamid said the proposed bridge and infrastructure work for the project would cost more than RM100mil.
He said Zecon was in talks with several parties, including established public-listed property developers in Peninsular Malaysia, to enter into either joint venture or strategic partnership to undertake the mammoth project.
“The collaboration will help Zecon to undertake bigger projects and ensure that whatever project we do, we can do it speedily.”
Hamid said Zecon was asset-rich, having a landbank of some 730ha in the state capital.
However,he admitted that the company had to improve its cash flow position.
“(The group's) liquidity is an issue we are now addressing. We plan to sell some of our assets before the end of the year to fund our planned projects.”
Zecon's on-going projects include the construction of Sungai Triang dam in Negeri Sembilan, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak's (Unimas) medicine and health science faculty, Bintulu compressor station building works, Kapit water treatment plant and Matang Road's revised route in Kuching.
Zecon, through wholly-owned unit subsidiary Zecon Toll Concessionaire Sdn Bhd, is involved in the operation of Kuching's sole privatised Tun Abang Salahuddin Bridge across Sarawak River in Pending.
With revised toll rates by 7% and 10% implemented in January 1 this year and increase in traffic volume, the company expects to up its toll collection by about 20% to RM14mil this year.
