KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 10): Sales of the manufacturing sector in December 2013 increased by RM2.8 billion or 5.4% to RM55.4 billion, compared to RM52.6 billion reported a year ago.

On a month-on-month basis, the sales value increased by 4 % (RM2.1 billion) compared to November’s revised RM53.3 billion.

During January – December 2013, the sales value of the manufacturing sector increased by 0.2% (RM1.3 billion) to RM624.4 billion.

In a press statement today, the National Statistics Department said that the higher December number was due to increased sales in 80 of the 116 industries surveyed.

The five main industries that recorded an increase in sales value were refined petroleum products, television and radio receivers, motor vehicles, television and radio transmitters and computer peripherals.

The department added that the number of employees, and salaries and wages for the manufacturing sector had also recorded an increase.

On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, the number of employees increased 1.2% to 1.03 million people. Salaries & wages paid in December increased by 10.7% (RM299.4 million) compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, the number of employees increased 0.3% compared with the preceding month. Salaries & wages paid in December 2013 increased by 11.1% to RM309.1 million compared with November 2013. 

For the full year of 2013, the number of employees engaged during the period, increased by 1.2% (12,575 persons) to 1,035,136 persons.

Cumulatively, productivity or average sales value per employee in this period fell by 1.0% to RM603,226.
