By Chong Jin Hun / theedgemarkets.com | February 4, 2016 : 10:17 AM MYTKUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4): Malaysia and 11 other nations had signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement in Auckland, New Zealand earlier today.
The move will further liberalise trade among member countries, according to Bernama.
Bernama reported that Malaysia's International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed signed the TPP agreement on behalf of the country.
The 12 nations, which signed the TPP agreement comprise Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Canada, Vietnam, the US, Singapore and Brunei.
It was reported that the signing ceremony was held at the SKYCITY Auckland Convention Centre at 9am. (New Zealand time).
Earlier, Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said via Facebook the country's participation in the TPP had to be seen as the government's responsibility to ensure the country remained competitive in the global economic backdrop.
Najib said the TPP would not only open new markets for goods and services but was also expected to spur business development, create jobs and offer goods to Malaysians at more competitive prices.
According to him, Malaysia has never been forced or pressured to participate in the TPPA. He said the country upheld democratic principles by ensuring Malaysians' views and concerns on the TPP were taken into consideration before the country signed the agreement.
